Hawaii FAQ

Telehealth psychiatry in Hawaii: your questions answered.

Do I need to be in Hawaii during my appointment?

Yes. Licensing rules are based on where you are physically located at the time of the visit, so you need to be in Hawaii for each video appointment. If you’ll be traveling, let us know ahead of time. Allan is also licensed in Arizona and Nevada, so visits from there may be possible.

Are all appointments by video?

Yes. Every Hawaii appointment happens by secure, HIPAA-compliant video, so you can be seen from home, work or anywhere private. The Hawaii address on this page is for mail and administration only. If you’d rather be seen in person, Allan’s Arizona offices are in Peoria and Wickenburg.

How much does a visit cost? Do you take insurance?

Self-pay rates are $175 for the initial psychiatric evaluation and $125 for each follow-up. We accept HSA and FSA cards and provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We don’t bill Hawaii insurance plans directly yet; ask us and we’ll help you check your out-of-network benefits.

Can my medications be prescribed through telehealth?

Yes, for many medications, including antidepressants, non-controlled anti-anxiety medications, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics and non-stimulant ADHD medications. Prescriptions are sent electronically to a pharmacy you choose on any island. PsychiatryCore does not currently prescribe controlled medications, such as stimulants, benzodiazepines or buprenorphine, for patients in Hawaii. If one may be right for you, we’ll help coordinate with a local prescriber.

Who will I see?

You’ll see Darrell “Allan” Benham, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who holds Hawaii APRN license APRN-6144. You’ll see the same clinician at every visit.

What do I need for a video visit?

A smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera, a stable internet connection and a private, quiet space. We send instructions for joining the secure video visit ahead of time.

What if I’m in crisis?

PsychiatryCore does not provide emergency care. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room.
